While the Freeze it, Hit it, and Drop it options are still employed by
some, the current size and sensitivity of the newer larger hard drives makes these options
extremely risky and definitely NOT recommended for hard drives with a capacity that’s greater
than 1 gig. And even then some of the operation suggested here should be approached with
caution. Getting it wrong by trying to save some money will only end up costing you more if
you then decide to pass on your hard drive to a data recovery company…
There are, broadly speaking three classes of data recovery, Logical, Electronic, and Physical.

• Logical
Where the FAT, NTFS or other file structure has been corrupted either by accident
or on purpose or individual filed or folders have gone missing. The hard drive has
not suffered damage to the components of the hard drive itself.

• Electronic
Component failure on the PCB (the circuit board on the bottom of the hard drive)
in the motor or internally.

• Physical
Internal damage to the hard drive, damaged platters, head crashes, damage to
the motor, or head rack signal amplifier. You need a clean room and plenty of
experience to have any chance of a successful outcome here.

Logical recoveries are becoming an affordable option for those people who are familiar with the
risks involved with data recovery. Software tools that are now available for this task vary
greatly in their capability, complexity and cost.

Careful research should be done before any work is done on the damaged hard drive. If you
are able, get another hard drive and experiment. Format it, Fdisk it, delete files and partitions
and learn how the data recovery software operates under these various conditions.

Before to start work on your own or your clients hard drive back it up, the backup mantra is
one that you all should be familiar with by now! There are tools available to backup (or image)
a hard drive that has been fdisked!! Use them. Ghost software is not suitable for this task,
then perform your recovery attempts on the image not the original.

This Help topic will be in several parts. Each part will posted in daily increments. This is part 1.

This is a situation that every tech support person has faced or will face at least once: a failed
hard drive.
In this particular case, a user was getting errors like “disk 0 error” and “invalid drive specification.”
Here were the other facts in the case:
• The data wasn’t backed up.
• The problem came out of nowhere.
• The user had accessed Setup and tried to manually enter the settings for the drive type when
“Auto” didn’t work.
• There was no startup disk made by this machine.

Reviving a drive like that one—even if only long enough to copy its data before you throw the
drive in the garbage—is a tough challenge.
When this document was first compiled back in 2001 data recovery was (and still is
for many) a very expensive option.

While the Freeze it, Hit it, and Drop it options are still experimented with by some, the current
size and sensitivity of the newer larger hard drives makes these options extremely risky
and definitely NOT recommended for hard drives with a capacity that’s greater than 1
gig. And even then some of the operation suggested here should be approached with caution.

Getting it wrong by trying to save some money will only end up costing you more if you then
decide to pass on your hard drive to a data recovery company…
If your hard drive does work and you are attempting to recover a FAT or NTFS file
system, then this FREE step by step guide could help you get back your lost files.

Found this beauty over at retronintendo.com

Following the instructions here I successfully disabled the NES Lock out chip. It didn’t take long and was surprisingly easy.

I have a couple NES’es so I chose the the one in the worst shape. It’s missing the door that closes over the game and I picked it up from a pretty sloppy kid so I figured it must be in pretty bad shape inside. I was surprised to find out that it was in good shape and probably wasn’t used that much by it’s original owner. Anyway if I failed I wouldn’t be to upset if I ruined the NES and you should keep this in mind when attempting this MOD. Although it is an easy mod and I had success there’s no guarantee that you’ll have the same results.

Before you attempt this mod take appropriate safety precautions. This is an electrical device and can kill you if you’re not safe. Turn your NES on and unplug it from the wall. Wait a couple minutes for any electrical current to discharge. Also discharge yourself by touching something metal to get rid of any static electricity, a static discharge can ruin sensitive components. Also any undesired effects from this mod is YOUR responsibility and you’ve been warned about the electrical hazards in doing this mod. Attempt at your own risk! I will not be held liable to ANY harm you do to yourself or your NES!

First gather the appropriate tools:
A phillips head screw driver.
A small sharp knife.

Open your NES by removing all the screws from the bottom of the unit. Pull the lid off and you’ll see that the NES mother board is protected by a thin metal guard. Find and remove all the screws holding this gaurd in place.

Remove the guard and expose the game loading mechanism. Remove the screws holding it in place and slide it towards you, lift up while you do.

Lift the mother board out of the plastic NES shell and disconnect the three(3) connectors which should allow you to completely remove the mother board out into the open. You’ll find another thin metal guard on the bottom of the mother board, remove that as well.

Now that you have the mother board out locate the Lockout Chip. “10. Find the lockout chip. “U10 CIC” will be printed above it on the PCB. (The U number is not relevant; “CIC” is.) The lockout chip on my console has the following text printed on it:

3197A
© 1986 Nintendo
9213 A

“This is for a U.K. model console. Other known numbers are 3193A (American),3195A (European), and 3196A (Hong Kong). The chip has 16 pins.” I’ve circled it in red.

Holding the board exactly as it is pictured. On the bottom of the lock out chip there are eight(8) pins the one we’ll worry about is the fourth(4th) from the left. This is where the magic happens. Now the proper way to do this is to cut this pin and solder a wire from the cut pin to ground. But that’s to much work and is not really needed. Take your small knife and saw at this pin unto it’s disconnected. You can use a volt meter set to check resistance to make sure the pin is actually cut. Doesn’t take much effort to penetrate this small metal pin so be careful not to cut through any other pins.

Once the pin is cut reassemble your nes in reverse order from above. Plug it in and try it out. I had a copy of “Bee 52″ that refused to work, now that I’ve disabled the lockout chip it plays fine. Another pro of this MOD is that some of the “red blinking” problems are related to this chip. If the chip on the game does not respond to the chip on the NES at the right moment the game will fail and not load.

Hopefully it all goes well with your attempt to do this excellent MOD, I’m glad I did it!

It looks like our site went down for most of the day yesterday. After some heavy duty researching, it appears the cause of our issue was our “super cache” not playing nice with our SEO plugin…

See, our super cache stores translated versions of our website on our server. We translate our site into over a dozen different languages. And it seems that our search engine friendly URL’s could not get a good permalink for anything past our index.

Anyway, we fixed it and everything seems to be operational once again.

Sorry if the glitch caused anyone an inconvenience.

Thanks, The 2 Geeks

Anyway, I just wanted to give a big thanks to our members for helping us get the site back up to where it was before the devastating database crash that killed our old site.

In the world of gaming, very few letters are as important as A, W, S and D. These four characters, placed in an approximate pyramid on a standard keyboard, are the standard keys used for movement in first-person shooter games like Counter-Strike and Half-Life. That is why the Logitech G13 Game board puts a simulacrum of those keys front and center with special divots in the keys for quick identification.

The keyboard actually consists of 22 programmable keys - the four in the center can be mapped to the standard four needed by most PC games - and a mini joystick with three action buttons. You can create multiple profiles for different games and map different keys to different actions.

The keyboard ($79.99) also has an LCD screen that connects to most games and can display game statistics, system information or even messages from your in-game friends. The keys are back lit for nighttime play, and the entire board is contoured to soothe a gamers’ tortured grip after long hours fighting terrorists or killing zombies.

The G13 works with Windows and Mac computers and will be available next month - just in time for all those post holiday gaming sessions.

Check out some of Logitech’s other great gaming accessories, visit Tiger Direct, in my opinion the most reliable “below retail” technology store on the net.

Alright the first thing you are going to need to do is determine you have a
DS with a blown fuse. Try to turn on your DS. If the light goes on for a second,
and then turns itself off, there’s a good chance that this is your problem, and
this method will provide a fix. If not, then you may want to try it anyways.
It’s not like you have anything to lose…

Here’s a list of supplies needed for the fix:

Low wattage soldering iron (a 15W Radio Shack iron will be perfect. A
30W will work also, but I don’t recommend using anything higher wattage
than that, or the heat could damage the DS mobo)

Solder

Thin wire (I like to use a piece of a resistor or similar components
lead. You only need a tiny piece and the lead will provide it)

Tri-wing Screwdriver (”Nintendo Screwdriver”. If you don’t have one, you
can get one

here for really cheap [and free shipping from Hong Kong ;)])

Phillips head screwdriver (Any small phillps screwdriver will do)

The “Nintendo Screwdriver”

Alrighty, now onto the tutorial. Take your tri-wing screwdriver and unscrew
all the screws circled in red. Then use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the
screws circled in green.

Once you have unscrewed those screws, put them all in a secure place so you
don’t lose any of them. You’ll need them to reassemble the case later. Use your
hands to pry the bottom of the case off. You’ll need to use a little bit of
force to unclip the little clips holding it together. Here’s a great video
detailing the disassembly process. It wasn’t made by me, but it’s a great video.

After you have the DS disassembled, you’ll have something that looks like
this. The section in the red square is the section we’ll be dealing with:

Take a look at the mobo to find the F1 and F2 Fuses. These are the ones that
are causing the problem. We will take a look at F2 first, and then if needed F1:

NOTE: It is a good idea to test if the fuse is blown
before bridging it with a multimeter. Test both the F1 and F2 fuses. If one is
blown and not the other, leave the good one alone, and bridge only the blown one

Take your soldering iron and heat it up. When heated, carefully de-solder F2.
Do this by putting the tip of your iron on one end of the fuse and heating it
up. Gently pry upwards on the fuse until it comes loose. Then do the same on the
other side. There’s such a miniscule amount of solder on the board that you will
only need to hold the iron to the board for a couple of seconds to get it loose.
This is good; the less heat applied to the DS’s motherboard, the better.

Once you’ve gotten rid of the F2 Fuse, clip a little piece of wire just big
enough to bridge the two contacts left behind from where the fuse was. It might
take a bit of maneuvering to get it there because it’s so small. Once you get it
in place, apply some heat with your iron and solder it to the two contacts.
Before you start messing with F1, put your battery in and test it. If it turns
on, great! You’re done. Close it back up and you’re good to go! If it still
doesn’t work, move on to the F1 Fuse and repeat the process again for that one.
Close your DS back up and you’re good to go!

If you have a DS Phat, this process should work also. The F1 and F2 fuses
will be on different places on the motherboard however, so you will have to do a
little bit of searching to find them. Just do the same process as above once
you’ve found the fuses.

So hopefully this worked for you and you are now able to play your DS again!
Thanks for reading, happy modding!

When the first generation of women entered the workforce in earnest in the 1970s, they succeeded in the only way they could - by imitating men. Authoritarian leadership and tight control was the hallmark of that day’s businessman, and women were not exactly welcomed into the ranks of management. Well ladies, that was yesterday, and today is today!

Forget what your mama or your boss told you, because following the rules can be bad for your career. Today’s CEO/entrepreneur can no longer tap his/her company’s full potential using a “command-and-control” style. The 21st century business woman needs to be able to build a vision based on the awareness of economic transformation, then help her partners and staff fulfill that vision. She must draw on a wide range of skills to get to the top and stay there. Following are 7 Key Characteristics that are essential:

1. Sell the Vision: A leader with a fresh, independent plan for her company’s growth and future has a distinct advantage in luring and keeping great talent and investors. Vision is not some lofty ideal, but an obtainable concept that is easy to understand and will make the company grow to another level.

2. Reinvent the Rules: While women have traditionally been socialized to please others, the 21st century leader knows that good girls rarely post great returns. The strong managers/owners today not only anticipate change, they create entirely new organizations that respond to shifts and search for innovation.

3. Achieve With A Laser Focus: Go where others fear to tread! Being aggressive and ambitious has long been considered male traits, but they are key qualities for new leaders. Today’s business woman has the ability to home in on opportunities that others may simply not see, and then excel in that uncharted territory.

4. Use High-Touch in a High-Tech Era: When a number of leaders are conducting business by e-mail, voice mail, passwords, and PINs, the female entrepreneur succeeds because she guides with a strong, personal, bed-side manner. Today’s business woman is just as technologically savvy as her peers, but her skill with staff and customers is “high-touch” which gives her a critical edge and separation from the “pack”.

5. Challenge or Opportunity? - Women are great at turning a challenge into an opportunity instead of using the “slash-and-burn” approach. They are able to make bold strokes, but they also win the cooperation of others in the organization in making any transformation a success.

6. A Customer Preference Obsession: In this information age which makes it easier to shop around for the best “whatever”, businesses must work harder to give people what they want before their competitors do. There is no substitute for spending time with clients to become expert at their businesses and learn their demands. Female leaders are almost intuitively adept in doing just that, and without the client even suspecting.

7. Courage Under Fire: Show me any career woman or female entrepreneur today that isn’t able to “stand-the-heat” in any tough-call situation. Their decision-making skills are rooted in a high level of confidence, because they’ve had to weather and surpass any and all “corporate” storms they’ve encountered over time.

It takes a certain mind-set and bravado for anyone to start their own business and succeed, but it’s even more difficult for a female entrepreneur. Let’s face it, ladies! We’ve always had to be twice-as-smart and twice-as-confident as any male counterpart in the corporate world. After all, if we can bear and raise the future generation, how can running a successful business scare us?
